Whether you’re new to art making or longing to get back to a neglected practice, adult art classes at Denver School of the Arts offer fun, no-stress play with a variety of materials and techniques. All levels are welcome. Students must be at least 16 years of age.
DESIGN AND COLOR, Tuesdays, 6 – 8 pm, January 15, 22, 29 and February 5 We’ll use a variety of techniques and materials in a sketchbook as we learn about shading, color properties, and mixing. We’ll discuss basic design principles including balance, symmetry, unity and variety. No previous experience is necessary. Activities and Content: We’ll do a variety of exercises in the book each week following demos/discussion; color properties, color schemes, and mixing with complements; basic 2-D Design principles; expressive elements including composition, pattern, color, line, value, shape, space; Idea Generators and Artist Block; Creative journaling and collaging. Materials: All materials (including paint, brushes, pencils, glue, scissors, collage papers) are included EXCEPT a sketchbook. Please bring a spiral or bound sketchbook (no larger than 9 x 12 and no smaller than 7 x 7) to the first class. Look for a sketchbook that doesn’t have super thin paper as we will be doing some painting in the book.

PRINTMAKING: Five Wednesdays, 6 – 8 p.m., January 16, 23, 30, February 6 and 13. Learn several basic printmaking forms and techniques including relief, intaglio, monotypes and screen-printing in this accessible, introductory class. Students will create small sample prints in each technique. Prints can be used as greeting cards or framed. Students with printmaking experience will be develop skill and select specific techniques to work with. Materials: All materials and tools (including easy cut rubber linoleum, linoleum cutters, Plexiglas plate, etching needles, brayers, barens, soy based inks, screens, squeegies, stencils, X-acto knifes, scissors, screen print base, paints, paper and pencil for sketching) EXCEPT printing papers are included with tuition. We will discuss papers at the first class. Class Activities and Content: 1 – 2 color carved reduction relief print; dry point intaglio print; Monotypes; stencil screen print; Discussion and survey of prints in a variety of techniques; Original artist prints vs. mass produced prints; Design and image development appropriate for each technique.
